Looking into his eyes, she saw a passionate heart with a loving soul. They were friends and lovers, yet he wanted more. She was immortal with her survival contingent on vampires. She could never be more with a human.

"I think you need a girlfriend."

Laughter burst from him, but then it died and a serious expression masked his face. "I have one, but she doesn't know it yet."

"Oh? Do I know her?" This was good news, although unexpected. Maybe it would help him want to be more friends than lovers with her.

He brushed his fingers over her chest and pushed aside the edge of her shirt. "She's in here somewhere." He traced a heart over the area where hers beat.

A shiver ran down her spine. Did he truly think she would agree to be his girlfriend? It warmed her soul to know he thought of her so fondly. But they could never be more than friends and lovers.

She took his hand and lifted it away from her heart. "Jay, we can't--"

"Why, Celee? Give me one good reason."

"How about this one," said a deep voice.

A flicker of annoyance crept into Celee. The vampire's appearance couldn't have come at a worse time.

Greger came to a halt next to them. He wore a black trench coat, dark pants and a dark shirt--the same attire she'd seen him wear the night before.

"She's immortal and you're not. You will die some day. So, do yourself a favor and find a human to procreate and be happy with."
